A recent show review:
“Another new favorite is the Roots. If you don’t know now you know, the Roots are the real deal. Their set was so seamless as they bounced from classic Roots track-to-track. Questlove, the afro-pickin’ drummer, played for a solid two hours straight! Black Thought, a true lyricist, delivered his best flows at the end. They are instrumentalists, which is rare to see in the hip-hop genre.

They rocked as a 7-piece, 8 if you include the sound man, which you should because he triggered so many timely effects to Black Thoughts vocals. During their anti-war message in which guitarist Captain Kirk went off, the show became less hip-hop and more rock. Someone complained they weren’t playing any Roots songs and then moment later I saw that same guy with his hands up in total hip-hop surrender, dancing. Some people love to hate and some people love to create. The Roots are creators, innovators as they had a tuba player rock with them, and excellent musicians.”
